Northport Village

Its roots go back to the Matinecock Indians, and this quaint village still has cobblestones, trolley tracks, and a sweet shoppe dating back to 1929.  Throughout 2019, Northport is celebrating 125 years as an incorporated village, but it is certainly not stuck in the past — it’s a bustling place with many attractions for boaters.

Northport is an easy locale to traverse, with interesting shops, boutiques, and galleries to lure you in and many enticing eateries. Enjoy delicious cuisine from breakfast through dinner in restaurants and cafés (some have outside seating) and then treat yourself to an ice cream before a show at the John W. Engeman Theater. Don’t want to be indoors? Enjoy the stroll to Northport Village Park for people and dog watching (Northport is a dog haven), watch your kids have fun at the playground (Northport is a kid haven), or walk along the dock and sit in the shade of the gazebo as you watch other boats of all sizes and types come and go.

If you’re a newbie to the village with a love of history, time a visit with the Northport Historical Society and Museum’s monthly guided walking tour.  Or visit the museum on Wednesdays through Sundays from 1:00 to 4:30 pm; its 1914 building, originally a Carnegie library, is on the National Historic Register.

Northport hosts a weekly farmers market down by the water on Saturdays through late November. The Northport Art in the Park Festival on Sunday, July14 is a family-friendly festival of fine arts, crafts, music, dance, and poetry.

Weekends aren’t the only time to visit Northport. On Tuesdays August 6 and 13, a part of Main Street closes from 6:30 until 9:30 pm for Northport Harbor Family Nights. Enjoy live music, outdoor dining, sidewalk sales and more.

The Northport Community Band presents five Thursdays of “peace and music” from July 4 through August 1 in the village park at 8:30 pm.  Musicians singing and playing folk, Americana, rock, jazz, and more perform in Northport Village Park on Fridays through August 30 starting at 7:00 pm. All the concerts are free; bring chairs or blankets, though the music will probably move you to get up and dance!

Another can’t-miss Northport boating experience is the annual Cow Harbor Day. Main Street is closed to traffic, and the day is filled with strutting cows, marchers, bands, antique cars, activities, food, and family fun. The event takes place on the third Sunday of September, following the Great Cow Harbor 10K held on the third Saturday.

On Sunday, October 6 enjoy ArtWalk, a free, self-guided walking tour through Northport’s galleries, studios, and an eclectic array of galleries-for-a-day around and along the village’s picturesque streets and harbor.

The village dock offers transient space on a first-come, first-served basis at no charge from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm (see dockmaster for evening and overnight fees). Seymour’s Boatyard (631-261-6574) has transient moorings and Britannia Yacht Club (631-261-5600) has transient docks — always call for availability. The public dock and Seymour’s are in the heart of the village; Britannia is a bit of a walk, but the facility has its own dining, pool, and supplies.
