Port Washington

Boaters flock to where boaters are welcomed, so it’s a safe bet that Port Washington is a popular destination. You’ll think of The Great Gatsby as you navigate through picturesque Manhasset Bay, then arrive at a scenic village that offers something for everyone.

The area boasts a charming Main Street with many browse- (and buy-) worthy shops, more than 50 restaurants of all styles and cuisines, historic homes, museums, parks, and free summer cinema and concerts.  A performing arts theater features musical styles as varied as folk, cabaret, Broadway, and rock, and presents shows for children. Leashed dogs are welcome at most places in the village.

Port Washington’s farmers market is billed as the only all-organic market in New York State. It’s open on Saturday mornings from June through October at the town dock.

If you’re looking for even more of the Gatsby experience, the Sands Point Preserve on the original Guggenheim Estate is believed by many to be the “East Egg” of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel. The 216-acre-park and historic mansions are reachable by car service for tours and events.

Also appealing, and reachable by car service, is the Polish America Museum. Visitors learn the history, culture, and folk arts of the Polish people and diaspora in the United States throughout 15 exhibit galleries. There is also a gift shop.
