Beach Cleanups

On Saturday, September 21 — aka International Coastal Cleanup Day — volunteers join forces to protect the world’s waterways and creatures. Armed with gloves, trash bags, and enthusiasm, these cleanup crews remove trash on the beach before it washes directly into the water and causes harm.

It’s easy to participate in a coastal cleanup. We’re listing those cleanups known at press time (including ones on days other than September 21) and providing links to help you find more. In addition, coastal communities and civic groups form beach brigades, so search for one using your zip code or the name of a favorite beach. (If nothing shows up that works for you, the Ocean Conservancy has information on starting your own beach sweep.)
