Toddler Time!

Boating starts to become a fun activity for youngsters as soon as they start feeling comfortable on the water.

That ease actually starts before any boat outing — introducing kids to life jackets for the first time on a boat will probably disintegrate into tears and complaints. Instead, after buying properly fitting U.S. Coast Guard-approved jackets for the planned activity,* let them get used to wearing the unfamiliar in familiar places, preferably at home. Start out in short doses and increase the time worn.

*“Swim aids” are not substitutes for approved life jackets, and jackets rated for a pool or a lake are inadequate for boating on open waters. All children should wear life jackets everywhere (except in the cabin). The best life jackets keep heads out of the water, turn kids to face up, and have handles for adults to grab.

When little ones think the life jacket is no big deal, take short boat trips. Explain that the person driving the boat is in charge. No checking with mom, dad, or anyone else — when the skipper speaks, listen!

Familiarize toddlers with sensations on the boat, explaining patiently (and repeatedly) where to sit when the wind blows, the deck rocks, and the speed increases. Stress that nothing is tossed overboard.

Little ones can veer from a great mood to a foul one faster than a gull can steal your sandwich. Tantrum stoppers that work in familiar surroundings may not work on a boat, so tuck away a new toy or book to pull out as a distraction, or save an enticing food for just such a moment. Whatever the parenting experts say about not rewarding a tantrum goes out the starboard window when it comes to toddlers on the water. You want to pacify, distract, and calm because there’s no place else to go! (If you’re on a yacht, feel free to disregard this advice.)

Try to avoid using screen time as a distraction on the boat, as it might create nausea. Instead, look at the sea or the sky for something different. Most kids are curious about nature; if you sound engaged and look enchanted by the swooping seagulls, they may be, too.

No matter how much fun you’re all having, try to keep a toddler’s naptime consistent. Make up a comfy spot, cuddle if you can, and let the lulling waves do their magic.

Safety aboard is a full time job. Toddlers are impetuous and love to explore, so vigilance is required at all times. If a boat duty or nature calls, verbally affirm that someone else understands that they are tasked with the responsibility of watching the little boater.
