Satisfying Seafaring Appetites

My son’s favorite cuisine is “takeout.” He asks for that at every opportunity, but takeout gets tiresome. Sometimes it’s more fun to dock and dine or stay aboard and cook up a simple meal.

I can hear my son (and maybe you) saying, “Simple? How boring!” That might be the case if you don’t have a copy of The Boat Cookbook by Fiona Sims aboard. The author is a British food and travel writer who enjoys sailing on her father’s 29-foot sailboat and making the most of his basic galley. Thus, the subtitle of the book: Real Food for Hungry Sailors.

The soft-sided book begins with excellent suggestions for setting up and stocking a boat galley, then cruises through recipes that take no more than two pans and 20-30 minutes, ranging from mussels with cider to salted caramel and banana crunch, with a lot of tasty meals, snacks, and desserts in between. There’s even a “booze” section for those not traveling anywhere after their relaxing meal.

If you’re not sailing around the UK, you can skip the small sections on Sims’ favorite harbors and anchorages, but don’t drift past the fish stew and asparagus and goat cheese frittata.

Two tasty recipes from the book
