Northport Cow Harbor Day

Anytime is a good time to visit Northport, but there’s something extra special about being there as the Village celebrates Cow Harbor Day Weekend Saturday, September 21 and Sunday, September 22.

The Great Cow Harbor 10K on Saturday is one of the country’s most prominent 10K foot races, drawing athletes (and cheering sections) from near and far to the starting line at 8:30 am. After the race concludes, there’s a 2K Fun Run/Walk for families and non-elite runners, who get a fair share of cheering, too. Proceeds from the races support the Special Olympics and local organizations.

After the races, enjoy a meal in one of Northport’s many restaurants or pack a picnic to eat in Village Park. Either way, the park will start grooving with the sounds of The NCJO Big Band playing jazz, blues, and swing standard. Bring chairs or a blanket (dogs are welcome), or listen from your docked boat. If you’re in the park, don’t miss strolling down the dock to enjoy the lighted boats and boaters in costume.

On Sunday, Cow Harbor Day kicks off at noon with a parade down Main Street featuring local musicians, floats, school teams and marching bands, antique cars, and the Northport Trolley. Once the parade ends, enjoy the fun-filled festival in the park, with rides, music, vendors, contests, and lots of tasty food for sale from 1:00 until 5:00 pm. Enjoy children’s theater down the block, and at 2:00 pm, check out (or participate in) the “Crazy Boat Race” at the village dock.

Northport’s village dock offers transient space on a first-come, first-served basis at no charge from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm (see dockmaster for evening and overnight fees). Seymour’s Boatyard (631-261-6574) has transient moorings and Britannia Yacht Club (631-261-5600) has transient docks. The public dock and Seymour’s are in the village’s heart; Britannia is a bit of a walk, but the facility has its own amenities. Always check for availability and make a reservation before setting out, as Cow Harbor Weekend is very popular with boaters!
