Northport is a terrific village to visit anytime, but there’s something special about being there during its annual Cow Harbor Day Weekend September 17-18.
Back in the days when cows grazed alongside the harbor, the area was known as “The Great Cow Harbor.” While the cows have moooved along, Northport hosts the Great Cow Harbor 10K run on Saturday, September 17. This is a competitive championship race along a 6.2-mile route that finishes just west of School Street. There’s also a 2K Fun Run/Walk for families and non-elite runners.
Later, grab dinner or pack a picnic and catch a Jimmy Buffett tribute concert from Barometer Soup at 8:00 pm in the village bandstand. Listen from your docked boat or bring chairs or a blanket; dogs are welcome. Don’t miss Saturday evening’s lighted boat display along the dock — boaters in costumes go all out decorating their vessels as they vie for trophies and prizes.
On Sunday, Main Street bursts with pride as Cow Harbor Day kicks off at noon with a parade featuring local musicians, floats, school sports teams and marching bands, antique cars, and the Northport Trolley. After the parade, Harbor Park transforms into a fun-filled festival, with amusement rides, live music, local vendors, boating contests, and lots of food to enjoy.
Northport’s village dock offers transient space on a first-come, first-served basis at no charge from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm (see dockmaster for evening and overnight fees). Seymour’s Boatyard (631-261-6574) has transient moorings and Britannia Yacht Club (631-261-5600) has transient docks. The public dock and Seymours are in the heart of the village; Britannia is a bit of a walk, but the facility has its own dining, pool, and supplies. Always check for availability and make a reservation before setting out.
