STAY WELL Fast Ways to Bring Down Your Stress

Advice columns abound on proven stress relievers like yoga, meditation, massages, guided imagery, and running. But what can you do during days (weeks, months) when you have too much stress and too little time? Try one or more of these methods to bring your stress down enough to stay well:

  1. Chew gum. Studies say it works to relax us, especially when done vigorously.
  2. Take a walk. Five minutes will relieve stress and 20 minutes counts as exercise.
  3. Take a warm shower or bath.
  4. Light a lavender or frankincense candle.
  5. Cut out one serving of caffeine (or switch a cup of coffee to green tea).
  6. Don’t say “yes” to everything. “No” is a complete sentence.
  7. Get on the floor and play with your pet.
  8. Do something crafty, like coloring or cutting.
  9. Give someone a hug (a kiss would be even better).
  10. Go to bed 10 minutes earlier.
  11. Tense every muscle in your body, hold for a breath, then release. Repeat.
  12. Wear something soft against your skin.
