Whether you boat on the South Shore, North Shore, or East End of Long Island, there are beautiful, protected anchorages offering a wonderful day on the hook or as part of a raft up. You may already have a favorite spot not on our list, but how about trying one of these destinations as a change?
South Shore
Hemlock Cove is where area boaters love to hang out, join relaxing (or sometimes a bit exuberant) friendly raft ups, or row to shore with their kids and dog. It’s located along the State Boat Channel opposite Gilgo State Park.
Most of the cove is deep, but check the depth when you get close to land. The southeast corner provides a nice spot to spend the day, but we suggest that you get there early.
There are no amenities in Hemlock Cove; the closest fueling is further east in the State Boat Channel.
North Shore
Leeds Pond, on the southeast side of Manhasset Bay, is well known among locals as a great place to take it easy. Drop anchor and enjoy the views, go swimming, or raft up with friends. Nearby is a beach you can reach by dinghy (there are no facilities).
A pumpout boat is available in Manhasset Bay, and there is a water taxi for transportation into Port Washington for dinner or to bring back a pizza and ice cream. Both services monitor VHF channel 9.
East End
Year-round and seasonal residents of historic Nassau Point (non-native inhabitants date back to at least 1649) flock to its beach and waters. The location, opposite Robins Island, provides a generally calm place to anchor — enjoy both the company aboard and the beautiful scenery along the shore.
While there are no facilities at the beach for boaters, there are places close by for fuel and food (watch out for swimmers in the area).
